#018 - Katie Frances Stoddart - On Business coaching, changing career and growth

Hi everyone.

There is finally my first interview of 2020. And what an interview. I have not known Katie personally but seen a LinkedIn post where she answered productivity questions from Stoyan a previous guest of the show. Those answers were so deep and interesting that I left a note and hence we agreed to have this interview.

Katie a real engineer with an affinity to Math and Physics, worked for a few years on the sea analysing data before she made the leap into coaching and never looked back. Her love to connect with people and socialising definitely help her.

Here a few highlights:

Her colour is blue. Mostly turquoise as it reminds her of the sea and sky. The infinity of the univers.

Secret... Knitting and crocheting. It's both manual work and has a mindfulness element in doing so.

Speaks French, English, Spanish and German fluently.

Advice to learn something new. Find the purpose why you want to do it, and then experiment. When creating a new habit it is important to know early what works for you and what not.

Morning Routine:

Meditation (Gratefulness, compassion and visualisation), lay out the day, breakfast and work.  Midday workout to refill the tank.

Her view on Creativity:

Anything that uses the right brain, chaotic, unstructured, art

Innovation:

Using creativity with a goal, direction and structure. Take the known and improve it with new ideas.

Creativity in her life:

All the time. Content creation, Sessions with clients thinking on the feet, using a free flow to help change the direction of the session.

Tips to increase creativity:

  • Free your mind. She empties her head with a meditation before a coaching session. This helps her to absorb the new information better
  • Take 3-4 days off. Pull all plugs and be in nature, concert, reading. Not Netflix. Be away from the daily life and problems

For the ones with the believe that they are not creative

  • Find examples in your life where you used creativity to solve the problem or create something. Even if you think it's not creative. E.g. programming
  • Ask yourself where did the ideas come from. What was the perspective I took. Realise that you are creative

Misconception about creativity:

  • A big obstacle for people could be that people perceive only successful writers, painters or musicians as creatives, and if they didn't achieve that, then that must mean they are not creative. => this limiting belief needs to be corrected to free up to be more creative.

Tip to find the next step when being stuck:

  • Katie used journaling every day when her engineering job was not enough anymore
  • Write down what you could imagine doing in 10-20 years. How you life, what's your day like etc

Advice she wished she had taken earlier:

  • Getting up early and be productive.

Advice she gives but often is not taken:

  • Relax more. Take 2-3 Days off every 2-3 weeks or month
  • Take 5 min. Close your eyes and focus on your breath
  • Meditate

Call for action:

  • Relax and think of your childhood. What did you enjoy doing? What brought joy? You never know what you will learn about yourself. This might show you what is missing in your life or what could be your next step.
