#057 Ashley Green - There is always an opportunity to adapt and pivot at the moment

Welcome to this episode with Ashley Green the Mindreader, mind magician, podcaster (TSM), business coach and generally energetic person that wants to help the magic entertainers around the world to pivot their life after the big lock downs. Ashley cofounded and co-hosts the podcast, blog, tribe and business coaching "The Successful Mentalist" (TSM) together with Aidan O’Sullivan.

This interview was recorded together with another two episodes on the same day with Ashley and Aidan from the TSM. It turned out to be a long day, with a lot fun and many great tips and insides on how to change and grow. There is so much you can learn from those 3 interviews that I highly recommend them. Especially if you are already a follower of TSM. We went deep into Ashley’s psychology, mindset and understanding of life and business. His learnings, his growth and how 2020 helped him to pivot his business and grow exponentially, so much that he and Aidan decided to help other magicians and entertainers to pivot their lives and become more successful and in the end live the life they dream of.

The 3 words how he describes himself are:

  • Weird, Quirky: As he embraces his weirdness, accepting himself the way he is. This helps him to go better through life.
  • Optimistic: During the last 1-2 years Ashley build up a lot of resilience. This helps him during business stress and the lock down. He came up with the mindset: “I am still here and alive. That is important!” The Universe gives back what you expect.
  • Adaptive: It goes well with his optimism to pivot his life and adapt to new situation when needed.

Colour:

  • It is in his name: Ashley Green. Green is him. What a Question ;-)

Fun Fact or secret not many know about him:

He always wanted to be a plumber until the age of 17. He thinks the broken education system might be at the bottom of this. Putting you early on on a path that looks like a good fit, due to the skills and grades that one has; so this must be the path. But it definitely is not. He can’t imagine working for retirement. Why not enjoy life before that?!

We talked about:

  • His girlfriends strange gifts. E.g faceless painting, dead moth
  • His love for weird things
  • The excitement of being a entertainer and what he loves about it
  • School experiences
  • Environmental Sustainability course, and his love for it
  • Learning magic tricks and entertainment
  • His path from circus to magic to mentalist magic
  • Study paranormal through the psychology route
  • Performing on big stages from the age of 14
  • His rebellious nature
  • His frustration at the day job and that he couldn’t bring any input
  • Asking “What am I actually doing to help people; to leave my mark on the planet; to be remembered?”
  • “How can I help myself, how can I help other people?”
  • Grounding yourself and open up for opportunities
  • His meditation practice (20min up to 40-60min daily). Primetime middle of day
  • He enjoys silent meditation
  • His daily walks of one to two hours. Sometimes 3 times a day
  • Walking in the park without phone or technology. Ground yourself, listen to the environment, nature, smell, feel and be present in the moment.
  • Prioritise your health, mind and body
  • How he was able to pivot his life and entertainment business to online performances during Covid lock-down
  • Why don’t we learn about ourselves. Mindfulness, down time and more at school?
  • His creative engineering projects as a kid
  • Limiting belief “I need the financial security” • Accepting that you are good at the task that you want to do
  • His move from self doubt to do all the things he knows he can
  • His confidence in being creative: “Wack me anywhere and I will come up with a new idea or solve a problem”
  • I Focus only on what I can do, what I wanna do and what is fun to do.
  • His TV show. He didn’t need it or want it but was ready to embrace it. So it came to him. It all came from having a bit of fun not doing it for money.
  • His brother’s and his autism and the documentary they did
  • His experiences with autism and that he embraces it fully
  • “Why are you happy that you are autistic?” “Why wouldn’t I be? I am happy with myself! You say that I should be unhappy because of a label?!”
  • Understanding oneself and having confidence

His definitions of creativity:

He used to think that creativity is spontaneous and some people have or don’t have.

He thought that he definitely is not creative. Yet looking back he was always creative but not seeing it.

  • Training his creative power to a great skill, asset

“Creativity is a trainable skill!” This input has changed his life, now he thinks himself as being one of the most creative people.

Learning to be creative.

It’s a mindset shift you need to go through to see your own creativity.

Identify your key things. The once that worked for him.

  • Making sure to write down all ideas. Good or bad.
  • Making sure to accept that you are creative. When you accept it the ideas will flow
  • Switch Off. “Einstein - “Combinatory Play” also known as “The McGiver effect”. Letting your ideas rest in the back of your mind. Work on the ideas or a project you have at hand with all your focus and then switch off. Don’t think of it. Your subconsciousness will work on the idea and a solution will suddenly come. Now you can work on it again and switch off. Do that cycle, iteration as many times as you need.

Innovation:

Innovation and creativity are interlinked. Ashley and Aidan did a lot of innovation in their business. They alway innovate. Innovation is a skill like creativity that can be learned. Learn, train, read.

Advice:

Each day take time to be mindful and be with yourself. It is easy to get trapped in your life and your head. This will help you to change your life.

Ground yourself. Be quit and your mind starts thinking. Good ideas start coming up. Stop the negative thinking and get out of the negative mindset. How can I help myself and help others?

Remember:

  • “Some people look for problems and some are looking for opportunities”
  • “And so what! I am still alive.”

To be able to aim for what you really want. You need first to have that foundation of confidence in you. Then you can point and shoot. Otherwise you are shaking and shooting in too many directions.
